I've been designing and building competition-winning aircraft since grade school. I've also spent years on the business side of aviation and technology as entrepreneur, team leader, and consultant guiding product strategy, business planning, and marketing.
My multi-industry experience ranges from advertising to aerospace, and from hi-tech to construction. Marketing strategy and communication, and business writing have been the key elements of everything I've done.
My first paid writing gig was the 1997 cover story about my 160 mph LykaJet design for Model Airplane News.
Here's why that matters: 80% of the performance at 10% of the cost.
That may be today's Aviation Week headline, but it was also the core principle behind my 1997 LykaJet design. Today, that same principle is the force driving many aerospace startups.
I began my business career as an account manager at D'arcy Advertising (Publicis Group), translating client marketing objectives into national brand advertising campaigns.
That wide-ranging combination of experiences is why I can write about aerospace and technology from the inside.
A bit further down the road, I built a B2B sales team from start-up to $260 million/yr. for a large federal agency, managed construction projects from pouring foundations to closing the last sale, and collaborated with aerospace engineers pushing the limits of aviation technology.
As a lifelong business writer, I've written countless articles, blog posts, web pages, business plans, newsletters, and case studies. Outside of business, my writings range from articles on aircraft design and engineering to sustainable business growth and the occasional science fiction story.
I have a BA in Marketing Communications / Journalism from Southern Illinois University. While at SIU, I had the privilege of taking courses in advanced problem-solving led by internationally recognized futurist R. Buckminster (Bucky) Fuller. And yes, Bucky's lectures were full of the same run-on sentences so familiar to his readers, but his brilliant insights were well worth the concentration.
I'm still a confirmed gearhead and the meticulous caretaker of a 26-year-old Jeep 4x4. Just for the record, I'm told my sense of humor tends toward the ironic, though ironically, I'm not quite sure what that means.
